Best Places to Buy Furniture & Home Decor for Transitional Style Design

We’ve really enjoyed turning our house into a true home. Over the past couple years, it’s been a safe haven from the pandemic, a place for our friends and family to gather and where we’ve built the foundation for our marriage. Soon, it will be where we raise our child! For as much time as we spend here, creating a place that reflects us with pieces that will truly stand the test of time is a top priority. As we’ve done that, we’ve learned what the best places to buy furniture and home decor are, specifically when it comes to transitional style design. Below I’ve put together a list of my favorite sources, as well as my favorite products from them – some of which we own, and others I simply think are beautiful.

Arhaus

Arhaus is our go to and absolutely one of the best places to buy furniture! Their modern pieces are simply stunning and complement transitional style design beautifully. This oversized mirror surprised us because we thought it would be too big, but the light it reflects makes our entire place look bigger. I adore this ebony cabinet, featuring slat details and a marble top. It’s also available in an elongated media console! This recliner is the perfect example of what a difference craftsmanship can make – it’s incredibly comfortable for me despite my broken tailbone. We incorporated this cabinet into our living room, and love the pattern and depth it brings to the room. And while I never originally thought we needed a martini table, this one has been one of the most functional pieces of furniture we own! We incorporated this arm chair into our entry as a place for our guests to take off their shoes, and of course, can never say enough good things about our modular sectional (full review).

West Elm

West Elm is another one of the best places to buy furniture, and often more accessibly priced. Lighting is often considered the jewelry of a home, and this LED rod chandelier is basically a sculptural piece of art. These stools are some of the most popular because of their versatility, comfort, and easy care. I love how unique this rug is, and the variety of neutrals it features that tie a space together. This wingback chair has a lot of the same benefits as the stools, and makes such a chic statement! I can imagine this dining table working with more than simply transitional style design, making it a fantastic option if your partner likes a different aesthetic than you or you’re considering resale value. There’s a lot of ways to style this slatted buffet, whether as office storage, a TV console, or a place for dining linens. Mid-century inspired chairs like this one can also work a lot of places as well, like in a bedroom reading nook, entryway, or living room. A gallery wall can be such a special moment in a space, and being able to purchase all the frames at once is incredibly convenient.

McGee & Co

This beautiful bread box is an inexpensive way to elevate your everyday and keep your kitchen counters from looking too cluttered. Our extendable dining table, while an investment, is one of the big reasons why we consider McGee & Co to be one of the best places to buy furniture (full review). Lamps can be hit or miss, but this stacked one is stands out with its substantial size and dramatic flair. For a smaller and less expensive mirror than our Arhaus one with the same impact, I highly recommend this option. I love the mix of materials with this media cabinet, as well as how it mixes styles. The details of this side table are what make it so stunning – the slightly larger size and woven accent both make a minimalist iron table look much more design forward. Finally, there’s two stunning yet simple examples of form and function: this step stool and this nightstand.

Lulu & Georgia

This outdoor sofa is simple but incredibly chic, and the quick drying mesh upholstery is genius. I adore this headboard, which is very similar to ours and available in many different fabrics. I’m a fan of everyday items that are also beautiful, like these salt and pepper grinders. These wooden candlesticks are a great example of transitional style featuring a modern silhouette with woodgrain detailing. A chaise like this one with lots of curves and tapered legs is a glamorous alternative to a chair or loveseat. Wood and cane is such a fantastic combination, and I love how they look together in this media console. The mix of travertine and wood in this oval coffee table is stunning, as is the mix of clean lines and curvy legs in this sofa.

Alice Lane

This swivel chair is both inviting and modern, and in my favorite upholstery color – white! I’m also in love with the natural white oak of this console, which is fairly unique compared to other similar pieces I’ve seen. The dark, rich marble of this side table is absolutely gorgeous and truly doesn’t need any styling. I love how this leather desk chair looks and can imagine adding a lot to an office space. While we’re on the subject of leather, everything abut this bench simply incredible, from the asymmetrical legs to the baseball stitching to the brass feet. The burnished black of this dresser adds a stunning touch of masculinity and is incredibly sophisticated. The wood frame, cane inlay, and linen blend seat of this dining chair blends different styles wonderfully, while the footed marble tray is a versatile decor piece you can move throughout your home.

Crate & Barrel

We look to Crate & Barrel mostly for functional and decor pieces, but it’s earned a reputation as one of the best places to buy furniture as well. One of our absolute favorite buys from here is our dining plates, which are incredibly affordable but have a very artisanal look. I really appreciate the built-in USB charger on this desk lamp, and of course love the mix of wood and matte metal. When you have a lot of space and want to create levels in your room, a floor vase like this one adds great texture and dimension. This black pitcher is unique and unexpected, and is one small way to make a statement. Before we move over to furniture, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the iconic Le Creuset dutch oven! The inlaid legs of this console table are a fantastic detail I think adds such a great character to the piece. Tripod floor lamps like this one is modern and industrial, but also retro. Last but certainly not least, this sculptural accent chair adds a playful touch that’s still sophisticated.

Pottery Barn

Similar to Crate & Barrel, I’ve found Pottery Barn is a great place for decor even though it’s first known as one of the best places to buy furniture. Let’s start with these brass candleholders, which have such amazing texture and depth to them! These arch bookends have the same kind of dimension and I think they can also be styled as a sculpture set. The mother of pearl in this chandelier is absolutely stunning and even more so when the light is on. Stoneware serving bowls like these are fantastic for a kitchen island or dining table to display fruit, moss balls and more. This brass table lamp is simple but still makes a statement and I love the hidden USB port! The terracotta bowls and quartz catchall can be put in nearly any room to serve as functional decor. As for furniture, there’s so many styling opportunities for this coffee table that really highlights the woodgrain.
