Hi y’all! I’m so excited about this blog post where I’ll be sharing the mood boards I created for my parents’ home. Similar to me and Johnny, my brother prefers are more modern touch when it comes to design. I’ll walk you through each room I’ve designed so far along with why I chose the finishes or decor I did! I hope this helps you when it comes to designing a space you love or a house you’re building for your family!
You can shop each item by clicking directly on it in the moodboard, or going through the picture list below.
KITCHEN
I am so excited about this kitchen! We are doing a tuxedo kitchen, with white cabinets in the back and then black cabinets on the island. We are topping it off with a big calacatta foresta slab for the counters. This is the same slab I have in my kitchen and it is truly beautiful. It’s also easy to clean!
Since the black island is really going to pop, I wanted to play off the black and add a luxurious black and gold faucet and soap dispenser. My family cooks a ton, so getting a single basin sink was very important. My brother spotted this Kohler Prolific Sink and thought it would be great for my Mom because it has different accessories and “shelves” for her to wash veggies or leave dishes to dry! We will add gold hardware and beautiful sculptural barstools to give the kitchen a modern nod.
For the backsplash, we got this white ceramic tile and put it on a herringbone pattern. We didn’t want it to pop too much, so we went with Delorean Gray for the grout color. Overall, it’ll add so much texture to the kitchen in a subtle and elegant way.
DINING ROOM
The dining room is nestled in a nook on the righthand side of the kitchen. It’s a cozy spot and I wanted it to feel a little bit grand. This solid wood dining table is like a piece of art. It’s a beauty and seats up to eight. Since our parents are older, I am using head chairs with casters to make it easy for them to sit down and get up. I love how these are a look for less of a much more expensive Restoration Hardware chair. To give the room a bit of a dressed-up feel, I love these brass and velvet chairs.
A light fixture can really make a space and I love the streamlined look of this modern chandelier. Plus, it’s much more affordable than it looks and also comes in black!
I’m still on the fence about a rug, but if I do add one to the dining room, it’ll be this floral one that’s super affordable!
LIVING ROOM
One aspect I’m really excited about is the living room. It will be very open and airy. A great place for my parents to relax and enjoy the view out their back window. We are using Daltile Harlequin Brass and Marble tile around the fireplace with a simple wood mantel. Here is something similar. I’m still a little torn on what chandelier to put in the living room, but this black and brass one catches my eye and ties in the look from the kitchen. Of course, we’ll be adding a Samsung Frame TV above the mantel.
Modern style doesn’t have to mean uncomfortable or cold, so I have some soft textures to add that cozy factor. I love how these chairs swivel and the curved back. My parents will actually be using our bedroom rug from our apartment in their living room. I love the fresh cream color with the tassels and small brass details.
MASTER BATHROOM
Welcome to my Mom’s bathroom! I’m so excited about creating a bright and airy bathroom for her. It has a few feminine touches, but not too much. She really wants things to be white and clean, so that’s the approach I took. I really like the clean look of the Moen Align plumbing fixtures. We splurged on this shower sprayer for all of the bathrooms to make it easy to care for them when they get older and also for cleaning!
Speaking of the shower, I chose a marble-look tile in a 12×24 on a brick pattern for her shower walls. We are taking it all the way to the ceiling to give it that high-end look. We’re using the same tile in a smaller cut for the mud basin.
When it comes to flooring, I love being able have a fun floor when possible. My Mom really loves this gray floral tile and it has a hint of femininity. Plus, she matches with my Dad’s bathroom floors, which I think is so cute!
