As a reporter and anchor, I’ve found there are definitely key pieces, especially a work dress or two, I reach for more when “important” days roll around or just pieces I gravitate toward more because I love them. I’m sure many working professionals feel the same way. In addition to the red long-sleeved dress I recently added to my wardrobe (last seen here), this blue Of Mercer Madison Dress has been a tried and true staple.
I first heard of Of Mercer last September. Jonathan actually had introduced me to the brand after seeing an article on them in the NY Post, where women talked about their eternal search for work attire. He knew I constantly struggled to find work dresses I could wear on air that were professional. By professional I meant a work dress with material that isn’t see through or flimsy, an appropriate hemline (easier for me than most), not too tight and above all not too expensive. I’m always willing to invest in a fantastic dress, but I could not afford to pay $400 or more for one dress, when I will be on air five times a week. I was actually at work when I typed “Of Mercer” into my browser to take a look at the line’s collection. I instantly fell in love. I scrolled through the dresses nodding as I was thinking, “Yes, yes, yes” in my head. There were dresses I could see myself wearing not just at work or on air, but in real life for a variety of functions.
As a millenial office-goer, I could see why this line had so much potential. I had always felt a little jealous of my male coworkers, who owned a couple suits and could easily switch things up with shirts, ties and socks. For women, it’s much harder, especially in a visual industry. Of Mercer creates wardrobe workhorses, true staples women can reach for multiple times a week knowing they’ll walk through the door looking polished, ready to go and feel confident. That’s what I look for in a work dress. I can’t even count how many times I’ve worn this dress since I first got it in October. I’ve been waiting to blog it to see how well it holds up. After multiple trips to the dry cleaners, it still looks exactly like it did when it shipped to my Nebraska apartment beautifully wrapped with a handwritten note.
