Surreal Friday :: Burberry Trench & Bomb Threat to UT Campus {A Journalism Student’s Recollections on what happened}

Hello, Everyone! I hope you and your loved ones are safe today.
When I woke up Friday morning and got ready for class a few things were on my mind: acing my play quiz on A Raisin in the Sun, pre-ordering my new iPhone 5 and packing for weekend home. I never expected an evacuation due to a bomb threat on the UT Campus.

At 8:35 am a caller claiming to be Al Qaeda threatened to bomb the campus in 90 minutes.  At 9:50 in the Winship building, my “Greed is Good” class was doing a close reading of A Raisin in the Sun comparing the classic Poitier version with the contemporary Combs version when a lady burst into my class saying, “Andrew, we need to evacuate the building immediately.”

I chaotically threw my iPad, notebook and pencil case into my Longchamp tote and zipped it up. I followed my classmates out the door and out of the building into the gray drizzling rain. We walked North on San Jacinto toward Dean Keeton, not sure where to go and clueless as to what was happening on our campus. Instinctively, I wanted to make sure Jonathan was safe. I fished for my small phone in my tote and called him. A sign of relief escaped my mouth when Jonathan told me he wasn’t on campus and we made arrangements for him to pick me up.

After hanging up, I checked my phone for the official UT emergency text. It was sent at 9:50 to 69,000 people with directions to evacuate the building due to threats and to get as far away as possible. Once Jonathan rounded the corner of Dean Keeton and I got in the car, we followed the directions and drove away. We ended up at an Apple store where I kept up to date on what was happening on campus and updating the Good Morning TX twitter, ensuring our followers had the most recent information on the bomb threat. North Dakota State University and Hiram College in Cleveland, Ohio evacuated their campuses Friday due to bomb threats as well.

After a full evacuation and the buildings were checked, students and staff were allowed to reenter campus at noon. A press conference was held at the AT&T Conference Center. “There was always a question about the credibility of the threat,” President Powers said. “We could not assure ourselves this was not a credible threat, so we decided clearing all buildings was the prudent thing to do.”

Now that everything is over, campus is still quite deserted. I had plans to shoot a lookbook with my new Burberry trench another day, but I wanted to share with you all exactly what I was wearing when everything was happening. This is what I wore when I evacuated campus and this is what I was wearing when I stood at the Apple store updating the Good Morning TX twitter. I can’t help but think this month of September is quite somber. First the U.S. Ambassador in Libya was killed, along with Navy Seals; the 11th Anniversary of September 11th; and lastly the bomb threat just two weeks before the 2-year Anniversary of the shooter at the PCL Library on UT’s campus.

I’m grateful everybody is safe and I hope you have a lovely weekend.
