Valentine’s Day is kinda big deal in the Cung family. Decades ago when my Mom and Dad were living in communist Vietnam, they got married with barely any money. My Dad who was a soldier in the South Vietnamese Army, had just gotten out of a concentration camp. Without knowing it, they got married right before Valentine’s Day in the U.S. Growing up, I could expect my Dad to come through the door with special treats for my Mom. We didn’t have a lot of money, but he would show my Mom love and appreciation. Be it flowers, sweet treats, jewelry or a new dress, my Dad would have something. He also would get a little something for me and my older sister too. This year, things are different since my Dad had a traumatic brain injury, so I’m helping my Dad do some planning this year 😉
